A one-hour visit to a 4th or 5th grade classroom is available.
We begin by using our imagination as Danny plays a game of hoops in his living room.
After reading Chapter 1 of Coming to Ash Hollow, we dress up four students as the characters in the story: Danny Lawson, Buck Bishop, Kaley Ash, and the mysterious Caped Guy.
We talk about Danny’s strengths and his inner problem and relate those to our own feelings of what we might be good at and what might be a personal problem to overcome.
We adopt our motto for the day: “BE THE BEST I CAN BE!” and add a ‘pep talk’ for inspiration.
I first visited elementary classrooms in 2010 and have since been to schools in Salem, Keizer, Woodburn, St. Paul, McMinnville, Stayton, Silverton, Albany, Eugene, Beaverton, and Portland.
I donate the first book of the series to the classroom library. Some teachers use a student check-out system for the book; others read the book aloud to the class. Setting up a Literature Circle is always an option. Some teachers use a classroom set in a Literature-Based reading program.
Students may also purchase author-signed books for their own library collection at home.
